People who love lighting up their log burners but shiver at the thought of splitting knotty rounds by hand should take a look at a new product from Portek – the Matador.
Wrexham-based company Portek specialises in designing and manufacturing innovative wood-processing, agricultural, ground-care, and gardening tools, and this month has introduced the Matador 5.0 Tonne Hydraulic Log Splitter, which makes wood cutting a breeze.
When connected to a household socket, the Matador’s 2.2 kW electric motor delivers five tonnes of force to propel logs onto a steel cutting wedge, making light work of splitting even the largest, knotty logs, whether seasoned or green.
Portek’s designers have even included a working table and front catch table, something which is not commonly found on hydraulic splitters at this price point (£390 RRP). Instead of falling to the floor, split logs land on the catch table, making it easy for the operator to pick them up, reducing the chances of backache and ensuring a tidy work area.
With a powder-coated steel frame, a durable support leg, and solid wheels for easy positioning on flat ground, the Matador is a premium domestic product that fills a gap in both Portek’s product range and the wider market, designed for splitting logs for open fires, wood burners, or fire pits.
“During the last couple of years, we’ve had several dealers tell us that people love the look, performance, features and build quality of our professional-grade log splitter – the Charger, but don’t have the need for such a powerful machine. So, we decided to look at the hydraulic log splitters on the market and see how we could introduce something better,” says Morgan David, Sales Director at Portek Ltd. “The Matador is the result of that process.”
